Attendance

Arrival at School
The school day at Kununurra District High School begins formally at 8.00am and finishes at 2.10pm. Students need to be at school before 8.00am so that they can be organized for their first lesson (this may include getting a shirt and appropriate shoes. The primary classes are open at 7:45am.) Students should not be on school grounds before 7:45am (unless an invited participant for one of the numerous sport/music/cultural activities), as supervision does not commence until this time.

Lunch Break
Students have a lunch break between 12:40 pm and 1:08 pm. Primary students spend the first 10 minutes of the break eating lunch under teacher supervision.

Kindergarten to Year 10 students are not to leave school grounds at recess or lunch-time to buy food.  Year 11 and 12 students who leave the school grounds during the lunch break must provide a note to the Senior School Coordinator.

Leaving School Grounds
During school hours the students are under the responsibility and care of the school staff.  No child is permitted to leave the school grounds without written approval of their parent or caregiver AND the consent of one of the school leaders AND only after having been ‘signed-out’ through Reception.

As a privilege, Senior School students (Year 11 and 12) are allowed to leave the school grounds for lunch. The Senior School Coordinator has copies of the required permission forms for students and their parent/caregiver to complete.

Parents/caregivers who collect their children from the school during the course of the day are required to complete a clearance procedure at Reception. No exceptions are made to this procedure, which has been installed for the safety and welfare of students.

Student Absences
Regular attendance is vital to student progress. Parents/Caregivers of Pre-primary to Year 12 students are legally obliged to -ensure regular, punctual student attendance; and promptly provide an explanation for student absences.

If your child is absent from school a note or verbal explanation must be supplied stating the dates your child was absent, and the reason.  See Absentee Notification to advise the school of your child’s absence or you can also use the School App to advise.

When your child returns to school, please give a note to the class teacher or reception staff.  Alternatively you can call Reception and a message will be sent to the class teacher.  If you know in advance that your child is to be absent, please write a note for the school before the event.  This particularly applies to students who will be absent for an extended period of time.)

Secondary: If a student arrives at school between 8:00am and 8.15am they must go straight to their form class. From 8.15am onwards the student is to go through Student Services Reception to collect a late slip before they will be admitted to class.  Lateness to school without a reasonable explanation provided by a parent/caregiver is recorded by the Student Services Coordinator.  Repetitive lateness will result in a lunch-time detention supervised by the Student Services Coordinator.

Please note: During school hours, students are not allowed to leave the school grounds under any circumstances without the knowledge and permission of the class teacher and that of the Principal/Deputy Principal.

Senior School (Year 11 and 12): In recognition of the maturity of senior school students, a contract can be signed to allow their movement off the school grounds. The school makes every effort to provide worthwhile programs/activities for all classes from the first to the last day of each term.  While sympathetic to families who have difficulties in arranging for employment and school holidays to coincide, teachers cannot be expected to devise comprehensive and individualised programs for students taking holidays during the school term.

Work assignments are usually available to students whose absence is unavoidable (eg. due to illness, injury) or if there are extenuating circumstances.  Please advise your child’s teacher or Student Services Coordinator of any illness or injury which is likely to result in the child being absent for more than several days.

Transfers to Other Schools
As soon as it becomes known that your child is to transfer to another school please notify us of the date on which your child will be leaving. Arrangements involved in terminating enrolment at the school should be made as soon as possible, eg: pay outstanding contributions, return borrowed books/equipment and collect personal workbooks, etc. The child’s new school will notify us as soon as they process the enrolment and we will forward records (medical, psychological etc.), reports and other information.  A refund of school contributions, if necessary, will be made.
