A School Of Choice Empowering Students To Succeed
Welcome to Kununurra District High School
As the school’s Principal I have much pleasure in welcoming current and prospective families to Kununurra DHS. I sincerely hope that visitors use our website as a regular opportunity to keep abreast of the raft of engaging, challenging, differentiated and appropriate curricula and co curricula activities that constantly flow across our various phases of schooling within our unique educational setting.
Kununurra DHS provides a vibrant, supportive and creative learning environment that encourages choice, challenge and curiosity. Our context allows us to deliver seamless programs and a learning journey through Kindergarten to Year 12 and as such our excellent standards in both learning and teaching create outcomes which are exceptionally rich, relevant and fun. Our immediate community, led by a committed and robust Council and P&C Association, in partnership with a plethora of interagency and business engagement, is committed in supporting our staff provide a personalised approach to their delivery and so embrace diversity in individual learning styles that overtime will continue to produce outstanding results for our 1,000+ students.
In recent times the school community has undertaken a thorough and comprehensive review which has culminated in the establishment of the KDHS Business Plan 2016-2018 which is underpinned by a strong and contextual Governance and School Charter which clearly articulates the school’s Structures, Beliefs, Values, Standards, Expectations and our Foundations for Teaching and Learning.
The School’s ‘delivery and monitoring’ structures place an emphasis at Kununurra for the teacher to take an active role and indeed structure individual and group learning. Supporting our rigorous approach to the implementation of the West Australian Curriculum, the school’s Teaching and Learning program is delivered through a program of explicit instruction. Learning is teacher directed but student centered; “I Do – the teacher, We Do – the teacher and student, You Do – the student/s.”
Complementing this approach, our campus offers a suite of pastoral care programs and initiatives that support the development of leadership, resiliency, cooperative learning, strength, purpose, commitment and self-regulation. Teamwork is an important element underpinning everything we do at Kununurra DHS and is characteristic of the school’s embedded and highly successful programs such as Specialised Health & Physical Education, Music, Media & Art Programs; Clontarf Academy; The Graham Farmer Foundation: Follow the Dream; Rock & Water; Positive Behaviour for Learning; Kimberley Education for Life; PEAC; Indigenous Rangers; Gifted & Talented Extension Program; Differentiated Teaching & Learning Program; Chaplaincy Program; Technologies; Indigenous Languages (Miriwoong); Indigenous Languages; Peel Language Development; Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden; Year One Intervention Program; Role Models & Leaders Australia: Kununurra Girls Academy; Life Skills & Extension Program.
These offer individually tailored access, participation and a positive engagement across a range of educational and work place skill sets. Pleasingly, evidence suggests these continue to enhance our student’s overall knowledge, experience and importantly, competitiveness in terms of goal sets within their chosen educational and vocational pathway.
Kununurra DHS reflects a strong sense of community, where students show enjoyment, excitement and enthusiasm in a climate of trust and respect.
I look forward to meeting you if you are able to visit and view first hand, why Kununurra DHS is fast becoming the school of choice in the Kimberley.
